New Orleans’ French Quarter hotel

History Of The Audubon Cottages

The Audubon Cottages on Dauphine Street, located in New Orleans' French Quarter, was built shortly after two great fires destroyed most of New Orleans in the late 18th century. Since then, our cottage-style New Orleans hotel, its courtyards, and saltwater pool have welcomed many famous and haunted guests. Our French Quarter hotel, the Audubon Cottages on Dauphine Street, was once home to the infamous ornithologist, naturalist, and painter John James Audubon. American and English actress Elizabeth Taylor admired Cottage Three during her New Orleans stays. Even the afterlife took a liking to our French Quarter hotel and its courtyards inspired by John James Audubon’s work. The ghostly guest, a haunted musician wearing a military uniform is said to visit Cottage Four occasionally. Our collection of hotel suites on Dauphine Street has a history almost as intricate as New Orleans’ French Quarter itself.

The Famous Hotel Guests

The Audubon Cottages on Dauphine Street have welcomed notable guests whose legacies still echo through our French Quarter hideaway. Our namesake, John James Audubon—renowned American ornithologist, naturalist, and painter—lived in Cottage One during the winter of 1821, using Cottage Seven as his studio while completing Birds of America. Today, each suite honors his artistry with a limited-edition copy of the famed work. Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor also found her home-away-from-home here, staying in Cottage Three with its private courtyard and visiting an incredible 27 times over her career.

The Haunted Hotel Guests

Steeped in history, the Audubon Cottages carry more than just stories of famous visitors—they’re also home to a few ghostly ones. Guests and staff have reported sightings of a petite woman with long white hair and a soldier softly humming tunes, often appearing in Cottage Four or on the balcony overlooking the saltwater pool. Harmless and quietly intriguing, these spectral residents add a playful, mysterious charm to our century-old French Quarter retreat, delighting those with a taste for the supernatural side of New Orleans.
